Luxembourg, the little European Capital
Markus D | Posted 5/14/2010
When visiting Luxembourg the first thing that came to my mind was: Is this a city? Or a country? Or maybe both? After a few researches on Wikipedia I found out that its actually both. It is one of the smallest European countries, and the capital city is also called Luxembourg.
What makes this little country so special is its position in the heart of Europe as well as its importance in European politics and administration. Important institutions such as the European Court of Justice, the European Development Bank as well as the European Court of Auditors have their headquarters here.
Entering the city, you can feel the special spirit this place is radiating. It could be any other European city, but it is different. It is more European than anything. And it is a very historical place.
The inner city consists of two important parts. One is the upper part of the old town - which offers interesting monuments as well as shopping streets. This place can be visited very fast and nearly lets one question open: Is this everything?
It is not everything. For me, the most beautiful part of Luxembourg is hidden in a gorge that goes around the inner city, the so-called "Grund". You can access it walking down one of the footpaths or with an elevator near the parking house. From the Grund, you can see the rests of the fortification. There are lots of nice cafés here, and the view of the sandstone walls is just amazing.
All in all, this place is well worth visiting, but only if you are in the area. Be sure to visit some of the beautiful french cities in the vicinity, such as Metz!
